Food aversion



This can occur after prolonged enteral or parenteral feeding, vomiting or food anxieties in the family. It is associated with delayed weaning and autistic spectrum disorders.



Important features from history



  • Prematurity, prolonged enteral feeds, intestinal failure, significant vomiting in infancy
  • Patterns of family eating: eating together at a table, home cooking, snacking
  • Other sensory aversion
  • Parental anxiety and ‘force-feeding’ can exacerbate food aversion
  • Family history of food aversion
