Chronic liver disease: haematemesis or meleana



Gastrointestinal bleeding due to variceal bleeding is common in children with chronic liver disease or extrahepatic portal venous obstruction. This is a medical emergency requiring immediate action and referral to a specialist centre for endoscopy and management.



Differential diagnosis



  • Gastric or duodenal ulceration secondary to the use of steroids
  • Stress ulceration due to end-stage liver disease
