Information: Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC)


Presents with sudden onset jaundice, pruritis and fat-soluble vitamin deficiency, often during adolescence; may last for weeks to months. The oral contraceptive pill (OCP) may be a precipitating factor. The disease is caused by mutations in ATP8B1, ABCB11 or ABCB4 , but a precipitating event (such as the OCP) is needed to make it manifest.
