Use of analogies to assist with explanation of urological problems
One of the key skills in urology, as with all areas of medical practice, is the ability to communicate with patients. It is critical to use language and terminology that patients can readily comprehend. Medical jargon should be avoided where possible as this may not be understood by patients, who may be reluctant to acknowledge this. Disease processes are often difficult for patients to comprehend, as are the various treatments recommended. In many instances, simple analogies can be used to describe symptoms and explain the rationale behind different management options. Whilst there are numerous examples that may be used and individuals may easily develop their own, I have found a number to be helpful that are illustrative of the principle.
