Injury (Esophagus): Pill Induced
DEFINITION:
Injury of the esophagus caused by a any of a number of pills/medications
EPIDEMIOLOGY:
Anyone who can ingest caustic pills is susceptible to pill-induced injury
Esophageal dysmotility or structural abnormalities, such as rings or strictures, are clearly not required for pill-induced injury
ETIOLOGIES:
Antibiotics: more than one-half of all reported causes: Doxycycline, Tetracycline, Clindamycin, Erythromycin, Penicillin
Cardiac meds: antihypertensives, antiarrhythmics, Quinidine
