Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)

INDICATIONS:
 Biliary
 
 Diagnosis and extraction of common bile duct stones (if high suspicion)
 
 Diagnosis of primary sclerosing cholangitis
 
 Investigation, brushing and therapy of bile duct strictures
 
 Staging of bile duct cancer
 
 Diagnosis of bile duct anomalies
 
 Palliation of biliary obstruction from bile duct, ampullary, or pancreas cancer
 
 Imaging of bile and pancreatic ducts prior to ampullectomy
 
 
 Questions to ask about a stricture:
 Long or short? Symmetric or asymmetric? What is above/below the stricture?
 
 Pancreatic
 
 Acute recurrent pancreatitis (to rule out obstructive cause or sphincter dysfunction-should not be performed during acute episode)
