SPONTANEOUS BACTERIAL PERITONITIS (SBP)


Epidemiology:



  • Occurs in 10-30% of inpatient cirrhotics and <4% of outpatient cirrhotics


Etiologies:



  • Risk factors:



    • Cirrhotic patients with GI bleed


    • Ascites fluid total protein (AFTP) <1.0 g/dl (i.e. Low AFTP)


    • Serum bilirubin >2.5 mg/dl or Platelets <98 K


    • Prior SBP


    • Fulminant hepatic failure
